Parent Tips

Every year parents ask, "How can I help my child be more successful at school?"

Setting routines will help your child succeed in school. Many children do not handle change easily. They function better when they have boundaries and procedures. Establishing routines can help your child feel peaceful, focused, connected, prepared, and rested.

  • Peaceful-
    1. Purchase an alarm clock to help him/her wake on his/her own.
    2. Play soothing worship music while he/she dresses.

Tip: Can your child be dressed or be finished brushing his/her teeth by the time "I Could Sing of Your Love Forever" is over?

  • Focused-
    1. Serve a healthy breakfast. Studies prove a good breakfast increases concentration.
    2. Pray for his/her teachers, friends, and daily happenings.

Tip: Fruit juice smoothie with orange juice, fruit of choice, and yogurt.

  • Connected-
    1. Discuss what your child learned today.
    2. Ask him/her to share two good things that happened.

Tip: Ask specific questions to help him/her solve problems.
"What can you do if she treats you that way again?"
"What does the Bible say about that problem?"

  • Prepared-
    1. Have him/her study a little every day to learn new material (15-20 min.)
    2. Choose a specific time and comfortable place to complete homework or school projects.

Tip: Lay out tomorrow’s clothes and place packed backpack by the front door.

  • Rested-
    1. Set a specific bedtime.
    2. Have him/her get into bed 15 minutes early for reading together, storytelling, and prayer.

Tip: Doctors recommend 10-11 hours per night for children 5-12 years old and 8 ½ to 9 ½ hours for teens.

By setting a few routines, you will teach your child organization and order, two things that will help him/her be successful now and in the future.
