The Summit Christian Academy athletic program had a banner year in 2008-2009, with record-setting seasons in many sports. Under the direction of new head football coach Keith Bell, the Summit football team started off the year with the best offensive performance in school history by blasting Life Christian 38-8 in the season opener. The Eagles would go on to win more games than they did in the four previous seasons of the program’s existence combined. By going 4-5 on the season against a challenging schedule, the 2008 Summit football team laid a foundation that will surely be expanded upon in an even bigger manner in 2009 and for seasons to come. Senior offensive lineman Daniel Bell was named to the Tulsa World’s honorable mention All-State squad at season’s end, becoming the first Eagle football player to receive such an honor. While the football team was enjoying unprecedented success, the Summit Lady Eagles volleyball team was hard at work in the gym on their game. The team won 11 matches on the season and finished 5th in their regional. Senior setter Neva Sanders was named All-Tournament at the Coweta Invitational in October because of her stellar play. Senior Karen Brown was named team MVP. There was great excitement in the air once football ended and teams began to roll the basketballs out onto the floor! The Summit boys’ program was ranked 9th in the state by the Oklahoma Tipoff magazine’s pre-season rankings. Senior forward Justin Kanipe and junior guard Channing Migliore were both placed on the pre-season All-State honorable mention squad. The Eagles proceeded to reel off 19 straight wins to start their season, and they compiled a 21-2 regular season record. At one point, Summit was ranked as high as 5th in the state as they continued to find ways to beat their opponents. Summit won the Metro Classic tournament, the Afton Coca-Cola Classic tournament, and was runner-up at the Kiefer Dave Calvert Invitational tournament. Summit’s boys, coached by Roscoe Migliore, finished the season at 23-4, and senior forward Justin Kanipe was named honorable mention Academic All-State by the Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association. Justin was also named Team MVP at the Afton Tournament. Junior guard Channing Migliore was named All-State honorable mention and All-Metro by the Tulsa World while earning All-State honorable mention from the Daily Oklahoman. He was also named tournament MVP at the Metro Classic and named to the All-Tournament team at the Afton tournament. Junior Josh Moyer was selected by his teammates as Mr. Assist, Mr. Rebound, and Mr. Defense in recognition for his all-around play. The Summit Lady Eagles basketball team had a record-setting year by reaching 11 wins for the first time in school history. They were the Metro Classic runner-ups and were the Kiefer Dave Calvert Invitational consolation winners. The Lady Eagles also advanced to the second round of the state playoffs for the first time in school history. At season’s end, junior guard Ashlyn Gilbert and senior center Karen Brown were named to the honorable mention squad on the Tulsa World’s All-State team. Gilbert led Class B in assists for the season and was named the team’s MVP at the end of the season. In the spring, the Summit girls’ soccer team, in just their second year in existence, took great steps forward in their quest to be a championship program. The Lady Eagles finished their season with the most wins in school history and had two players named to the Tulsa World’s All-Metro honorable mention squad: sophomores Logan Pittman and Deanna Few. Pittman was named the team MVP. While the Lady Eagles were hard at work on the soccer field, the boys’ baseball team began its first season of OSSAA competition. After finishing the regular season with a 7-7 record, the Eagles went on to the OSSAA playoffs, where they finished as district runner-ups and finished the season at 8-8. For the first time in Summit baseball history, an Eagle player signed a national letter-of-intent when senior pitcher/first baseman A.J. Hawkins signed with Central Christian College of McPherson, Kansas. Junior pitcher/shortstop Josh Moyer was named to both the Daily Oklahoman’s and the Tulsa World’s All-State honorable mention squads. Moyer was also named the team MVP. |
