Did you know there are regular updates of Summit activities on Facebook? Here is a sample of a few of our latest postings.

Recent Field Trips

Super second graders went to KJRH, KXOJ, and Chuck E Cheese for their field trip. Lots of learning and fun took place as evidenced by the sleeping Ryan on the trip back to school.

Fabulous fourth graders went on a service field trip to the Ministry Center Thursday. They served by sorting clothes, packaging food, and singing Christmas carols. Serving those less fortunate than themselves really made them thankful for all their blessings.

Science Fair Winners

Congratulations to this year’s science fair winners.

Honorable mention for the Middle School Division: Leah Oosterloo, Gordon McAuliff and Audrey Rozell

3rd Place – Aliya Dragg
2nd Place - Brooke Thagard
1st Place - Timothy Blackstad

Honorable mention for the High School Division: Garrison Simon, Megan Berry and Shelby Reiser

3rd Place - Kara Jarnigan
2nd Place - Bethany Knapp
1st Place - Jessica Herndon

Tulsa World Article

Summit Christian’s J.C. Burger emerges as a leader on and off the court.

Check out this article on one of our senior basketball players.

What a Gas!

Last week in Chemistry class, students performed a lab learning how to collect pure samples of gas. The students collected carbon dioxide from a reaction of acetic acid and sodium bicarbonate. The students then used their knowledge of gas laws and chemical equations to calculate the number of moles of gas they had collected. They confirmed the identity of the product they collected by extinguishing a burning wooden split in the gas. Wow!

Helping Those In Need

Secondary students collected around $2300 to help those in need. The money will go to missions to purchase farm animals, medical supplies, school supplies, mosquito nets, and to support a shelter for young girls taken out of forced prostitution. Each 7th-12th grade Bible class collected money to see which class could bring in the most. Mrs. Parrish’s 9th grade girls were the greatest givers. Great job, SCA Students.

Summit Adds Electives

This year Summit has added a number of electives for students, including French, Current Events, Financial Planning, and Leadership. One of the most popular is the Psychology class taught by Dr. Melissa Thibodeau .

Dr. Thibodeaux (affectionately known on campus as ”Dr. T”) also teaches AP Language and Composition, Senior British Literature, Junior American Literature, Senior Girls Bible and is the Senior Class sponsor.

Where did you go to college?

“I got my undergrad in Communications at the University of Texas at Arlington, and my masters in teaching is from UTA and my Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of North Texas.”

Why teach a Psychology class?

“I took several graduate courses in psychology and found it very interesting. When I began talking to the students about it two years ago, they were excited about the possibility of taking the course.”

What are your goals for this year?

“I want the students to begin to understand people’s motivation for certain behaviors. In our efforts to lead people to Christ, it’s important to understand what kinds of experiences have affected their ways of thinking.”

What will the students be learning?

“They will learn about mental processes and behavior. We will talk about development, the nature v. nurture debate, mental illnesses and their treatments, how drugs can affect the mind and behavior, and other topics. We will also talk about how some psychological theories challenge the Christian worldview. I’m always looking for ways to present the information that will be applicable to the students’ experience.”

How do you plan on teaching Psychology from a biblical perspective?

“Filter everything we do through a Christian world view, and make sure everything is in accordance with the Bible.”

Can you give us an example?

“When we talked about the nature v. nurture debate, we discovered that there are theories that basically put the cause of behavior on environmental factors. While there is merit to this argument, as Christians we believe that God can heal all wounds, including psychological ones, and that we aren’t bound by the hurts of our past.”

What will you do outside of book work?

“Lots of projects, research, and field trips. The field trips will include The Little Lighthouse, and different elementary classrooms to observe different behaviors. We will research famous psychologists, specific theories, and famous case studies.”

On April 20 Summit students will work to help the Broken Arrow Community and to help raise funds for their school in the Summit Day of Service.

We are challenging each grade to get personal and corporate sponsors in an effort raise at least $4,000, of which, $1,000 will go directly into your child’s classroom in August.

10% will go to support Broken Arrow Neighbors, which serves needy families in our community. A majority of the remaining funds will be put in the Tuition Assistance Fund to help Summit families in need.

There are numerous ways to support this project:

1. Contact a local business about sponsoring your child.

2. Provide a list of possible sponsors to your class representative.

3. Come out and work with your child on April 20.

For more information, contact Roscoe Migliore at RMigliore@SCA-Eagles.com

Summit offers a variety of AP Classes in subjects ranging from English, to Science, to History. In advanced mathematics Summit students can do concurrent enrollment and take advanced math at TCC. To get college credit, students must pass the AP test or pass a college equivalency CLEP test.

“To get into AP classes, you have to make good grades. Also, you need to be able to do the work in those classes. It is designed to be college-freshmen-level work and it moves at a very fast pace. It is great preparation for college, and our students love the challenge. Our parents enjoy the fact that before students graduate from Summit you can earn up to 18 hours of college credit.” – Michael Rogers, Secondary Principal

“I took advantage of the opportunities of taking AP English and AP Chemistry. I learned a lot from both of those classes, and I also took the AP tests for them at the end of the year. Because I passed both tests, I did not have to take Comp 101 and Chemistry 101, which helped a lot.” – Emily Higginbotham, 2010 Summit Graduate

“My favorite class at Summit was probably AP English. Even though I hate English, I knew Dr. T was very smart and was truly there to help me. That class was fun, but I also learned about many things that have helped me already in college.” – Matt Hunter, 2011 Summit Graduate

What started as a goal in August has come to fruition in January as the entire Summit campus is WIFI ready, and the teachers have new lap top computers, mounted overhead projectors and other great technology in their class rooms. Thank you for making the donations to make this possible for our classrooms, teachers, and students!

”I want to give a shout of THANKS to you for the projector, mimio, and other equipment I got for our classroom. It has been so helpful to be able to teach about the 1920′s by actually showing them video/audio examples of the music, lifestyles, and experiences from that time period. It has been very enlightening to be able to show them moving representations of the earth, the moon, and the sun interacting with each other. The students are not only learning new skills, but they are also having fun doing it. Thank you so much for giving, donating, and allowing me to further your child’s education in a very EXCITING way! I am giving free tours of our educational experience in room 225. Come see the excitement!”

-Amy Garnatz, 5th Grade Teacher
