CURRICULUM
Part of Summit Christian Academy’s mission is to train children to become great people through academic excellence.
We accomplish this mission by being a fully accredited school which provides quality instruction through certified teachers in small classes. Based on a biblical worldview, we offer a variety of challenging courses which gives our students the opportunity to reach their personal academic potential.
THE MATERIAL
SCA utilizes the Bob Jones and ACSI curriculum to present all subject matter in a way that is consistent with the Word of God. Scriptural applications abound, encouraging moral choices which reflect biblical standards. Other publishers such as Glencoe and Prentice Hall supply a part of our curriculum; we screen supplementary materials (including library books) for their suitability to Christian education.
THE METHOD
At SCA we believe that Scripture advocates teacher-directed, student-centered learning. We establish a classroom atmosphere where the trained teacher explains material in a way that helps each student learn according to his/her ability. Within this traditional context, the students learn how to relate to one another in class discussions and projects. Components of our traditional method include a strong phonics approach to reading; recitation and drill, especially in math and spelling; hands-on learning; and assigned reading with parents at home.
THE MENTOR
Summit teachers go beyond the utilization of prescribed methods to encourage student learning of the adopted material. They also model Christian life in word and deed with the goal of developing young Christians. A teacher can present facts, but a mentor is a personal example to his/her students, one who garners their respect, admiration, and emulation. The Christ-like teacher also encourages biblical standards of conduct with fair and firm disciplinary measures that offer the students secure boundaries for their behavior. The Christ-like teacher is the heartbeat of SCA, sharing God’s love in a way that provides each child with the personal support that he/she needs to overcome self-doubt and to achieve individual success.
